Just a friendly reminder this holiday season- you are not defined by the number on the scale! While it’s a wonderful thing to have health and fitness goals, how much you weigh does NOT necessarily determine how healthy you are or how good you feel. Sometimes it’s easy to hold on to a number and to use body weight as an gauge for success. When looking at day to day fluctuations, there are so many other factors at play!
If you indulge in some rich holiday foods at a Christmas party or holiday dinner, your weight will probably be up the next day. But it’s not because you suddenly gained a massive amount of body fat. Perhaps you consumed more carbohydrates than you normally do… which leads your body to store glycogen… and for each gram of glycogen stored, the body also stores 3-4 grams of water. Or perhaps you consumed more sodium than you normally do. This will also cause your body to hold on to more water.
Your overall consistency in nutrition and physical activity have more, excuse the pun, weight than rare occurrences and specials occasions. Please take time to enjoy yourself and care for yourself this holiday season. It is a precious gift to be able to track what you eat and train in a gym. But it’s also a precious gift to have friends and family to celebrate the holiday season with.
